What are some of the ways that you can get some traffic?

Web traffic is what you want.  You want to be able to log into your google adsense account and see that people have been visiting your website.  You want people to find your web content useful and interesting.

Using a blog

You can start writing interesting information on a blog.  You have to start coming up with ideas about what people will want to read and what they are interested in.  Start using some of the free keyword programs and watch google trends.  Once you have a blog up you can look at creating articles for article directories.

Article Marketing 

When you start writing these articles and posting them you will start getting a little bit of traffic.  You have to pay attention to the article directory guidelines.  Check the number of hyperlinks that you can add in your articles and pay attention to where they say you can put them.  Make sure to follow the rules and get your articles approved.  The bigger article directories might have an approval process that takes a bit of time to get your article added.  Create good headlines that have keywords related to your content. Some of these directories have article title generators that can suggest titles that fit your article content.  

Building a list

As an affiliate you are going to be sending people to other businesses and hopefully they make sales and you get a commission.  The only thing is that you don't have access to the customer.  Sure they come to your website but if they click on a link and leave your site then they could be gone for good.

You get a one time commission on the sale but the end vendor gets a new customer and they get the customer information and can go back to that customer again with offers in the future.  Your affiliate business is no different than any other business.  You want to generate leads for your business.  Your web content is your lead generator. You want to build lists of potential customers that you can go back to time and time again.  List management software programs make it easy for you to communicate with your list. You might want to create a newsletter to keep the people on your list informed about new developments in your niche.
